Download, upload, ping and jitter: what do they mean?
- Download: how fast you receive data, such as a website, a film or a file. See also bandwidth.
- Upload: how fast you send data. Important for video calls, cloud backups and AI. See symmetrical connection.
- Ping (response time): how long a signal takes to travel there and back, also called latency. The lower, the better.
- Jitter (stability): how much the ping varies. The lower, the smoother your video and sound in calls.
For video calls and live collaboration, ping and jitter often matter more than the highest download speed. That is why this test also measures whether the ping rises when the connection is busy.
Why am I not getting the speed from my subscription?
A subscription often promises speeds "up to" a certain level. What you actually get depends on the whole chain:
- the WiFi: distance, walls, congestion and older WiFi standards;
- your device: an older laptop or phone cannot always handle the speed;
- the cabling and the router, especially at the office;
- other users on the same network, and a VPN.
Testing speed over WiFi or via a cable?
Test both. Via a cable you mainly measure your connection. Over WiFi you also measure the network in the building. If the cable is fast and the WiFi is slow, the problem is in the building, not with the provider. Choose the place under "Where are you measuring?" so you can compare the results.
Tips for a fair measurement
- Close other programs and downloads, and switch off any VPN for a moment.
- Measure at a busy time, when your colleagues or housemates are online too.
- Measure in several places, and once via a cable.

How accurate is this test?
It is a good indication of your connection at this moment, on this device. The result also depends on your WiFi, your device and how busy it is. For certainty, an expert measures on site, at several places and times.
Why am I not getting the speed from my subscription?
Often it is not the line, but what sits behind it: the WiFi, the cabling or old equipment. Try testing with a cable. If it is fast then, the problem is in the building. If it is still slow, it is more likely the connection or the subscription.
What is a good response time?
The lower, the better. With video calls and live collaboration you notice a high response time (latency) immediately. Even more important is that it stays low when the connection is busy. This test measures that too.
What is ping?
Ping is the time a small signal needs to travel from your device to a server and back, in milliseconds (ms). Another word for it is latency. In this test it is called response time.
