For IT professionals
Get a grip on the part of the network that is not yours: the building.
As an IT administrator, deskside support engineer or workplace engineer, you look after the laptops, the accounts and the equipment. But the fibre, the cabling and sometimes the WiFi belong to the building. When something falters, everyone still calls you.
The IT-Label and the IT Demarcation List put in black and white what belongs to the building and what belongs to your organisation. Independent measurements back you up in the conversation with the landlord. And when moving offices, you know in advance whether the new building can meet your requirements, instead of finding out after the keys are handed over.
Sound familiar?
- Users complain about WiFi in the corner of the floor, but the access points belong to the landlord.
- The patch cabinet is managed by the building, and you have no access to it.
- When there is an outage, nobody knows who should call the provider.
- The building systems are on the same network as your users.
- You are only involved in an office move after the lease has been signed.
What the IT-Label gives you
- A clear boundary. The IT Demarcation List records what the landlord provides and manages, and what you arrange yourself. Including who calls the provider when there is an outage.
- Independent measurements. Coverage, capacity and stability measured where people work. Useful backing when you need the landlord to act.
- Insight into the building. Which cabling is installed, where the patch cabinets are and how the networks are separated.
- A say in an office move. With an IT-Label, or a pre-inspection before signing, you know in advance whether the new building meets your requirements.
Free tools for your work
- Speed test: measure in several places in the building and compare the results side by side.
- Checklist for renting an office: the questions to ask before your organisation signs.
- Glossary: handy for explaining terms to colleagues, from latency to PoE.
- Background reading: office WiFi, CAT6 or CAT6A and cybersecurity in smart buildings.
