Network segmentation: what is it?

Dividing a network into separate parts, so that for example building systems and tenants cannot reach each other.

With network segmentation, one physical network is divided into several logical networks. This is often done with VLANs (virtual networks) and a firewall that determines what is allowed between the parts.

In a commercial building that matters. Cameras, access control and the building management system do not belong on the same network as the tenants' laptops. And in a multi-tenant building, one tenant must not be able to reach another tenant's network.

Good segmentation makes the network safer and easier to manage.

What does this mean for the IT-Label?

Network segmentation relates to Infrastructure (network management) and Integration. Building systems must be able to work together, but securely, separated from the tenants' networks. For tenants covered by NIS2, this is an important point. See firewall, IoT and IT and regulation.
