A building management system (BMS) is the brain of the building services. Among other things, it controls and monitors climate, ventilation and lighting. Facility managers can use it to spot faults and adjust settings.
Modern building management systems run on the network and can be linked to other systems, such as access control or room booking. Then, for example, the heating in a meeting room only comes on if it has been booked.

What does this mean for the IT-Label?
A building management system touches two components: Smart Building (climate and other building systems) and Integration (do the systems work together or operate separately?). A well-integrated system helps towards IT1 and IT1+. Since 2026, a building automation system has also been mandatory for larger non-residential buildings in the Netherlands.
