IT (information technology): what is it?

IT stands for Information Technology: managing digital data, computers and networks.

IT stands for Information Technology. It is about managing digital data, computers and networks: laptops, servers, the cloud, email, the office network and the WiFi.

IT is all about information. The goal is that people can do their work, and that data is secure, correct and available.

IT is different from OT (operational technology): the technology that controls physical processes, such as climate, lifts and access. In a Smart Building, IT and OT come together. So keep them separate with network segmentation.

What does this mean for the IT-Label?

The IT-Label assesses the digital infrastructure of a building that IT runs on: the connection, the cabling, the WiFi and the technical room. Also read IT and OT: the difference, and why it matters in buildings.
